MILWAUKEE GENERAL THEATER AUDITIONS 2025

Milwaukee Rep is proud to once again host the 24th Annual Milwaukee General Theater Auditions! The Milwaukee Generals are annual open-call auditions wherein actors local to the greater Milwaukee area (or those with local housing) can be seen by a wide variety of Wisconsin-based theater companies. The Generals allow local theater companies to get to know new local talent, as well as existing talent, in preparation for their own individual season castings.

This year’s auditions will take place in-person March 9 & 10, 2025 at Milwaukee Repertory Theater (108 E. Wells Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202), with a virtual option available.

Auditions will be open to both Equity and Non-Equity actors.

Auditions (both in-person and virtual) should consist of TWO of the following options - a classical monologue, contemporary monologue, or a 32-bar musical cut (approx. 1 minute) – and should not exceed 4 minutes in total. An accompanist will be present for in-person auditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am not local to Milwaukee/Wisconsin and/or do not have local Milwaukee/Wisconsin housing, can I still be seen or submit virtually?
The Milwaukee Generals prioritize those artists who are local to Milwaukee/Wisconsin, or have local housing, in order to best serve the casting needs of the participating theater companies. If you are not local and would like to be considered for a specific theater’s season, please refer to that theater’s casting submission guidelines. Theaters will hold their own individual EPAs or specific show auditions in search of non-local talent, and it is strongly preferred that you submit via those avenues and not the Milwaukee Generals.

I am under the age of 18, can I audition?
You must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the Generals to audition. Youth auditions for individual productions will be held by each individual company as needed.

What companies are attending the Milwaukee Generals?
The Milwaukee Generals are attended by theater companies of all different sizes who produce in the Milwaukee area and throughout the state of Wisconsin. Previous attendees include: Bombshell Theatre Company, Children's Theater of Madison, The Constructivists, First Stage, Forward Theater Company, Kith & Kin Theatre Collective, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Milwaukee Rep, Next Act Theatre, Peninsula Players Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, Skylight Music Theatre, Summit Players Theatre, Third Avenue PlayWorks, and more.

We will provide a Who’s Who list of companies/representatives each day for in-person auditionees, and a list of companies can be requested by virtual auditionees after the submission deadline.

If I auditioned in-person last year, can I audition in-person again this year?
If you have been seen in-person at Milwaukee Generals in the past year, or plan to attend the Milwaukee Diversity Generals in February, we strongly encourage you to consider submitting virtually. While we will not deny any auditionees who claim a slot, Milwaukee Generals are an important opportunity for new talent in the area to introduce themselves to theaters; please keep this under consideration when deciding whether to submit for an in-person audition.

What time will signups go live?
Signups for in-person audition slots will go live on this page at 9am on Monday, February 3, 2025. Set your alarms, slots usually go in less than 20 minutes!

You may not hold an audition slot for someone else. If multiple slots are held by a single person, every slot will be cleared by administrators and filled with members of the waitlist.

For in-person auditionees, your slot will not be considered confirmed until we receive your completed Audition Form. Please fill it out ASAP after securing a slot; the final deadline is February 21 2025. After the deadline, slots that do not have a corresponding Audition Form will be released to members of the waitlist.

Should I bring a physical headshot/resume to my in-person appointment?
You do not need to bring a physical copy of your headshot/resume to your Generals appointment; the materials you submit in your Audition Form will be provided to all attending companies by the organizers.

What should I do if I need to cancel my in-person appointment?
If you need to cancel your in-person appointment, please email casting@milwaukeerep.com as soon as possible.

How should I prepare for my in-person audition?
Detailed instructions, best practices, and more information will be sent out via email to all confirmed in-person auditionees on Monday the week of.

In the meantime, keep working on your two audition selections, and make sure that your whole audition package consistently runs 4 minutes or less!

How do I submit a virtual audition?
Please fill out the Audition Form and select “I am submitting my Virtual Audition materials.” Virtual auditions will be due by EOD on March 10, 2025.

Unlisted YouTube or Vimeo links are ideal: please make sure that all your links are correct, active and accessible. We will not be able to notify you if your links are faulty.

What if I need to update my headshot, resume, etc. after they are submitted?
If you need to update any materials after submitting, please email the updated documents to casting@milwaukeerep.com.

I didn’t get an in-person appointment; can I join the waitlist?
Yes! Please fill out the Audition Form and select “I would like to be placed on the waitlist for an in-person slot”.

We will offer appointments as they become available.

We will notify you via email when a spot becomes available, with 1 (one hour) for you to accept or reject the appointment. If you do not respond, we will offer it to the next person on the waitlist. Please have email notifications on and check junk/spam!

If you did not receive an email, a spot was not available for you. You are welcome to submit virtually by EOD on March 10, 2025.

Can I show up on the day-of to try and be seen?
We will not accept walk-ins at Milwaukee Generals due to scheduling restrictions.

However, a limited number of waitlisted auditionees will be selected to be On-Hold each day. Being On-Hold means that you will be on-site for either the 10am-1pm block OR the 2pm-5pm block and will be able to audition in the case of last-minute cancellations or no-shows (at the discretion of the organizers). We guarantee that On-Hold auditionees for each day will be seen by the end of their block.

If you would like to submit for a potential On-Hold slot, please sign up for the waitlist and select the On-Hold option.

On-Hold auditionees will be notified via email if they have secured an On-Hold spot by 6pm on February 28 2025.

When will I hear back about casting decisions/callbacks?
Each theater company has their own casting process and timelines: they might reach out the next day, in the next few months, or even next year for their new season! If you have questions about a specific theater company, please contact them directly.

Are all shows paid opportunities?
Compensation information – such as paid vs. unpaid opportunities, union contracts, etc. - varies from company to company. If you have specific questions, please contact the company directly.

When are the new Milwaukee Generals dates announced?
The Milwaukee Generals dates for each year are usually announced in late December/January, with signups going live about one month before the Generals. While Generals are usually held in March, they are subject to change year by year.

If you have any further questions, please email casting@milwaukeerep.com. Thank you for your interest in the Milwaukee Generals!
