Dear friends,
We write today with an important request: if you have not been vaccinated for COVID-19, please consider doing so soon.
We ask as theatremakers who have seen our industry decimated by the pandemic and its severe impact on the artists we employ. As parents of a 6-month old and 9-year old who are unable to get vaccinated and are susceptible to more serious disease with new variants. As caretakers to elderly and immunocompromised parents who are once again vulnerable. And as leaders who care deeply about the wellbeing of our audiences and donors, who have poured their hearts into our theaters for generations.
We understand there may be hesitancy for a wide variety of reasons, but we encourage hesitant folks to reach out to a trusted and licensed medical professional, preferably your primary care physician. We know there is a lot of noise, misinformation and heightened emotions around the vaccine, so who better to discuss your concerns with than the one person you turn to when you are sick.
For those who may not have easy access to a doctor, you may be interested in a panel discussion we recently hosted with experts discussing the COVID-19 vaccine. You can view the discussion here.
Let's Talk Vaccinations: A Conversation on COVID-19 | Milwaukee Rep
We are at a crucial moment in the pandemic given the Delta variant and the rise of cases nationally. We have the tools to end the pandemic today. The vaccines remain exceptionally effective at preventing severe infection and hospitalization. Recent data out of the CDC showed 125,000 COVID cases in roughly 191 million fully vaccinated people, which represents 0.07% of the fully vaccinated population. Less than 0.004% of those fully vaccinated have been hospitalized. However, the current number of unvaccinated individuals provide a breeding ground for the virus to mutant into new variants. We must not give the virus an opportunity to spread and evolve. This pandemic must end now.
After 18 months of mandates, quarantines and isolation, it is time for us to get back to our lives. To sit in a full theater and experience life-fulfilling performances. To hug our children and grandchildren without worry. To not have to worry about your employment, providing for your family or caring for loved ones. Please help us get back to normal.
